The QMK Proton C is the Controller You Didn’t Know You Needed
At the heart of every keyboard is a controller. It is a computer chip that is responsible for translating your button presses into signals your computer can understand. Many PCB’s have a controller built in (or “Pre-soldered”) while others rely on an external controller. The most popular external controller is a Pro-Micro.
Jack Humbert and I have been working an improved controller. We call it Proton C and it is a drop-in replacement for a Pro-Micro, with some extra features:
USB-C Port that won’t break off easily
32-bit Cortex-M4 Processor
PWM on every exposed pin
A break-away section with extra pins and a place to mount a speaker
RESET button with a sane bootloader
Add Audio To Your Build
Proton C comes with a speaker mount you can use to add Audio to any build. Just solder in a Mallory Sonalert AST1109MLTRQ and you can have auditory feedback. Whether you play a sound for layer changes, use Music Mode to turn your keyboard into a piano, enable Audio Click, or just use it as a cute little soundboard, having the ability to play sounds will give you new ways to extend and customize your keyboard.
Upgrade Your Existing Pro-Micro Based Kit
You can solder a Proton C into any QMK-compatible kit that currently uses a Pro-Micro, and compile Proton C firmware without any extra work! We’ve done the heavy lifting of making your existing keyboards work without any keymap changes. Just adjust your make target and it will build an ARM firmware instead of an AVR firmware. Configurator support is coming in Q1 2019.
